Honeywell demonstrate sustainability through EPD
Overview
Honeywell is committed to sustainability, transparency and the provision of responsible products to its customers. Obtaining an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), developed through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), was therefore an appropriate solution for Honeywell to demonstrate these goals upon the manufacture of their Gent S-Quad Self-Test (S4T) detectors.
About
Honeywell is a Fortune 100 technology company that is transforming the way every building operates to help improve the quality of life. With Honeywell solutions and services used in more than 10 million buildings worldwide, commercial building owners and operators use our hardware, software and analytics to help create safe, efficient and productive facilities. Honeywell Gent, formerly Gents’ of Leicester, is a Honeywell company. With over 150 years of experience, it is a leading manufacturer of innovative and flexible fire detection products.
Background
The Gent S-Quad Self-Test (S4T) series is a range of fire detectors with a patented Self-Test design, available in multi-sensors, Part-23 VAD, and sounder/voice options. It features an IP21 external moulding, a detector chamber design, and a dual microprocessor PCB, enhancing smoke detection and voice storage capacity.
Environmental Product Declarations measure the environmental impact of a product, and Honeywell's desire to obtain this Type III environmental label for their Gent S-Quad Self-Test was driven by a commitment to disclosing the environmental impacts of the product range at every stage of the life cycle.
Solutions
BRE is internationally recognised for its expertise in Life Cycle Assessment and has been a long-term trusted partner of Honeywell. This meant that BRE was the natural choice for Honeywell when they made the decision to obtain an EPD for the Gent S-Quad Self-Test (S4T) range.
BRE offers a comprehensive EPD scheme in line with EN 15804 and Honeywell were particularly impressed by the widespread adoption and recognition of this European standard in the construction sector. All EPD from BRE are listed on GreenBookLive, BRE’s unique reference source and online listing of environmental products and services, and Eco Platform, ensuring visibility and recognition.
Honeywell were keen to provide industry stakeholders with extensive knowledge on the environmental impacts of their Gent S-Quad Self-Test (S4T) range, and obtaining the EPD required collaboration and commitment from stakeholders across the organisation. Hetty Leung, Sustainability Regulatory Lead at Honeywell, explains “The partnership with BRE enables us to stay abreast of the emerging landscape of product category rules and standards, which can be incorporated in the product design and subsequent assessments. This promotes sustainable product choices for end users”.
Benefits
Honeywell has been able to demonstrate best practice and a transparent and sustainable value chain through the implementation of an Environmental Product Declaration. Honeywell’s customers are particularly pleased with this EPD as a demonstration of progress in developing sustainable products.
As a manufacturer, Honeywell focuses on energy conservation, material resource utilisation and waste minimisation, and the EPD has allowed Honeywell to disclose its environmental footprint in a uniform and transparent way, promoting the development of a larger and sustainable supply chain.
