Roof product testing

Roof product testing

Roofs are essential elements of buildings, impacting water runoff, wind resistance, insulation, and ventilation. We offer specialist roof testing services to analyse their performance.

Roof underlay testing

Roof underlay testing

BRE can independently test roof underlays in accordance with Annex A of BS 5534:2014+A2:2018, the British Standard for slating and tiling for pitched roofs and vertical cladding.

We can also test other roof components, such as tile clips, drive-in hook fixings and small element roofing assemblies in accordance with Annex I, J and L of BS 5534.

BRE’s dedicated testing apparatus meets the requirements set out in Annex A of the standard, and this testing provides the wind uplift resistance so the product can be specified for use on appropriate projects.

Assessment against Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) standards

Assessment against Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) standards

Assessment against Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) standards

MCS 012 specifies the scheme requirements and testing needed to demonstrate the performance of pitched roof installation kits for photovoltaic (PV) modules and solar thermal collectors. The standard references the testing of weathertightness, fire and wind resistance of roof integrated solar panels, to provide evidence that that these products can withstand the diverse weather conditions found in the UK.

BRE can test roof products in accordance with the MCS 012 test method for weathertightness and wind resistance using dedicated apparatus, including a configurable wind uplift test rig for roofs. BRE also offers certification of products against MCS 012.

Testing to BS EN 14437:2022: Ensuring the durability and safety of clay and concrete tiles against uplift forces

Testing to BS EN 14437:2022: Ensuring the durability and safety of clay and concrete tiles against uplift forces

Testing roof products to BS EN 14437:2022 is vital for ensuring the durability and safety of clay and concrete tiles against uplift forces. This standard sets the benchmark for product performance, helping manufacturers meet safety regulations and market demands.

BRE offers testing services in accordance with BS EN 14437:2022, utilising advanced facilities and extensive expertise. Our robust and cost-effective test method, undertaken by highly qualified, experienced professionals, accurately measures uplift resistance, identifying potential weaknesses. Multiple tests ensure comprehensive and reliable results, and the test is repeated three times, on three separate samples, to determine an average.

Testing against the TR/PREN 15601:2012 standard: Confirming the resistance to wind-driven rain of vents and roof coverings

The extent to which roof coverings can resist water penetration from the combination of wind and rain, commonly referred to as wind-driven rain, is important for the design of roofs. The combined action of wind and rain varies considerable with geographical location and this standard covers the zones in Europe.

BRE’s specialists can test a range of materials and products against this standard, in our state-of-the-art laboratories. Our facilities include a dedicated wind tunnel, and two loading rigs, meaning one sample can be tested whilst the other is assembled, greatly reducing the test time.

Testing against BS 8612:2018 - Dry fixed ridge, hip, and verge systems for slating and tiling

Testing against BS 8612:2018 - Dry fixed ridge, hip, and verge systems for slating and tiling.

BS 8612:2018 provides advice on fixing security, weather-tightness, durability and where required, ventilation. It aims to ensure that dry-fix ridge and hip systems are designed and built in such a way that they fulfil the essential requirements of new and refurbished roofs.

BRE has developed robust and cost-effective methods to help customers test products against Annexes A-H of this the standard.
