Products for Mental Health Safeguarding (ProMHS)
This scheme helps procurers and specifiers to select the most appropriate products for mental health and care facilities.
The Products for Mental Health Safeguarding (ProMHS) Verification Scheme is the first of its kind. It helps manufacturers to independently test and verify their products against the Informed Choices testing guide, developed in partnership with Design in Mental Health Network (DiMHN).
The scheme is applicable to all products used within a mental health setting such as bedrooms, bathrooms, toilets and communal spaces, These include:
- Doorsets, windows and their associated hardware
- Furniture
- Sanitary fittings
- Fixtures and fittings
- Safety devices.
Benefits of assessing to ProMHS
- Confidence for specifiers – The Products for Mental Health Safeguarding Scheme helps specifiers and procurers evaluate products for mental health spaces
- Safer spaces for patients – Products tested under the scheme are verified to support safer environments for people in mental health care facilities
- Support for manufacturers – The scheme gives manufacturers confidence that their products have been verified to independent standards in laboratory settings
As part of the scheme, each product undergoes rigorous testing in BRE’s test labs in accordance with testing guidance alongside detailed technical review of relevant documentation to ensure repeatable product performance.
The independent testing conducted to support this scheme may cover at least one of the following parameters:
- Part One – Ligature: an assessment of the sensitivity of products to be used as ligature anchor points.
- Part Two – Robustness.
- Part Three – Anti-barricade: an assessment of additional requirements for doorsets, hardware and window performance.
The verification process
Verification with ProMHS begins with an application and usually takes between two and four months.
- Step one - Application sent by client
- Step two - Application reviewed by BRE
- Step three - Proposal issued and payment received
- Step four – Documentation Review
- Step five – Testing conducted
- Step six - Product rating assigned
- Step seven - Verification and listing
