BREEAM Webinar Series: Maximising the Value of Existing Buildings with BREEAM In-Use

On 2 September 2026, BRE continued its BREEAM Webinar Series with Maximising the Value of Existing Buildings with BREEAM In-Use, hosted by James Fisher, Head of Strategic Partnerships and Client Specifications at BRE, and joined by Timothy Wright, Chief Capital Markets Officer at AroundTown, James Shearman, Head of ESG at Scape, and Frank Van Cauwenberge, Group Head of Property Management at WDP.

The webinar explored the critical role existing buildings play in delivering a more sustainable built environment and how BREEAM In-Use can support the ongoing management and improvement of existing assets. The discussion examined how a structured approach to measuring and enhancing building performance can help organisations make informed decisions, strengthen sustainability strategies and create long-term value across their portfolios.

Drawing on expert insights and practical, real-world perspectives, the panel demonstrated how building performance data and continuous improvement can support better operational and investment decisions, help organisations meet sustainability objectives, and respond to the evolving expectations of investors, occupiers and regulators.

If you missed the webinar, or would like to watch it again, the recording is now available.

"The reality is that the vast majority of the buildings that will exist in 2050 have already been built. Existing buildings have a critical role to play in delivering a more sustainable built environment. The future value of those buildings will increasingly be determined by how they perform, not simply by how they are designed. Organisations that understand their assets the best, can provide evidence of performance, and can continuously improve over time are likely to be the future winners in real estate."

"BREEAM provides a powerful signalling effect for the market. It gives investors, occupiers and other stakeholders an easy way to understand how sustainable a portfolio is, while demonstrating the actions that have been taken to improve performance. Ultimately, sustainability is about much more than energy alone. By taking a broader view of factors such as wellbeing, asset performance and operational improvements, BREEAM helps create buildings that are more attractive to tenants, support stronger long-term cash flows and deliver lasting value."

James Shearman
Head of ESG | Scape

"The value of BREEAM In-Use is that it provides a validated demonstration of performance, so we're not just telling people what we're doing, we're able to show evidence. It helps us establish a clear baseline, understand how our assets are performing and identify where improvements are needed. As a sustainability practitioner, it gives me the opportunity to focus on core areas for improvement and shape our overarching strategy, while ensuring the performance of the asset and how it's operated remains fundamental."

“For us, BREEAM In-Use is not only about achieving a certificate or a score. The real value is in what we learn from the assessment and what we do with those findings afterwards. If we see the same opportunities across different buildings, we can use those lessons to improve our existing portfolio, adapt our standards and even take them into our new developments. For logistics assets, this also means recognising the specific reality of the building and the important role of the client. That is how certification can become part of a continuous improvement process rather than a one-off exercise.”
