BREEAM podcast goes back to basics

BRE’s Head of Responsible Business Kaie Small-Warner and BREEAM’s Science Lead Tom Wilson explore what BREEAM is all about.

What is BREEAM? How does it work? And how can it be used to reduce the environmental impact of the built environment in the journey to net zero carbon? All these questions and more are covered in this episode of the BREEAM podcast.

BRE’s Head of Responsible Business Kaie Small-Warner and BREEAM’s Science Lead Tom Wilson explore what BREEAM is all about, why sustainability certification matters in today’s built environment, and how we are evolving BREEAM to respond to changes in technology and the world’s urgent need to de-carbonise.

A portfolio owner needs to be aware of these upcoming legislative requirements and BREEAM in-use is a good way to demonstrate performance and stay ahead.

Ideal for built environmental professionals who are just starting out or who are new to built environmental standards, this episode of the BREEAM podcast gives you the background on BREEAM, the world’s leading sustainability assessment method, and looks at what’s driving change in the built environment.

“There’s two big drivers at the moment… The EU taxonomy is European focused but we are seeing increasing numbers of these (legislative requirements) in other parts of the world. We’ve seen net zero federal standards in the US.

A portfolio owner needs to be aware of these upcoming legislative requirements and BREEAM in-use is a good way to not only demonstrate performance with those but stay ahead.

The other driver is coming from a slightly different direction, and this is very much about investor pressure. Investors want to demonstrate that they have got sustainable investments.

The CSRD is coming in to say “we can’t tolerate greenwash anymore”. We need to make sure our investments, if they are labelled as sustainable, are genuinely sustainable.

So, if you’ve got this portfolio of real estate assets how do you do that? BREEAM can help demonstrate that in terms of energy, in terms of climate, in terms of biodiversity” Tom Wilson BREEAM’s Science Lead at BRE.
