BRE Releases 2025 BREEAM In Use & GRESB Mapping Resource
The Building Research Establishment (BRE) has released the 2025 edition of its BREEAM In Use & GRESB Mapping Resource. This detailed tool is designed to help building owners, operators and consultants identify alignment between the US and International versions of BREEAM In Use (Commercial and Residential) and the 2025 GRESB Real Estate Standard and Reference Guide — the global organisation that offers a benchmark for measuring and reporting standardised Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) data for real estate and infrastructure investments to investors.
The updated resource highlights how BREEAM In Use Version 6 supports performance reporting across 34 GRESB indicators, translating into over 120 measurable touchpoints across Part 1: Asset Performance and Part 2: Management Performance. These touchpoints exemplify BREEAM’s ability to facilitate consistent, rigorous data collection at asset level and translate this to portfolio- and entity- level disclosures.
"As sustainability expectations evolve across markets, the BREEAM In Use & GRESB Mapping Resource offers a critical link between asset-level certification and the broader demands of portfolio reporting,” said Tom Wilson, Head of BREEAM Development at BRE. “It demonstrates how BREEAM can serve not only as a mark of building performance, but as a practical tool for global stakeholders seeking consistency, comparability, and credibility in their sustainability strategies.”
Certification continues to play a notable role in the GRESB Real Estate Assessment, now accounting for 11% of the overall score. GRESB awards full credit for all BREEAM standards, including BREEAM International In Use Commercial, BREEAM International In Use Residential, BREEAM USA In Use Commercial, BREEAM USA In Use Residential and BREEAM USA In Use Residential Plus. This recognition reinforces BREEAM’s status as a globally trusted certification advancing performance across diverse asset types and geographies.
“The 2025 mapping resource illustrates the depth of synergy between BREEAM In Use and GRESB, enabling project teams to streamline reporting and amplify the value of their sustainability initiatives,” said Breana Wheeler, BREEAM’s US Director of Operations. “It also reflects BREEAM’s ongoing commitment to helping industry stakeholders navigate complex, evolving expectations with confidence. By clarifying how BREEAM In Use supports GRESB indicators, we’re equipping stakeholders with a clear, streamlined path to meaningful performance improvements and better long-term outcomes.”
The Mapping Resource is updated annually in parallel with GRESB’s yearly guidance, ensuring users have timely insight into how BREEAM certification can underpin sustainability disclosures, regulatory compliance and strategic planning.
