BCAL Consulting improves collaboration through BIM certification

BCAL Consulting, a leading structural and civil engineering consultancy practice, wanted to establish a structured and standardised approach to managing information across their projects, and demonstrate, to both new and existing clients, that their practices were aligned with the latest industry standards.

BIM is of growing importance across building design and the wider construction industry. BRE’s BIM Certification for Businesses confirms an organisations’ capability to input into the Information Management process for the delivery phase of appointments and produce outputs from that process, proving BIM capabilities to ISO 19650-2:2018, an internationally recognised standard.

As a client-focused organisation, BCAL Consulting wanted to meet client expectations for high-quality BIM implementation while reducing risks associated with information mismanagement. Attaining certification to ISO 19650-2:2018 has improved BCAL Consulting’s reputation with its stakeholders.

The certification process, which requires effort from stakeholders across an organisation, has embedded a culture of improvement within BCAL Consulting, resulting in a more efficient operation and new ways of thinking.

BCAL Consulting undertook a pre-assessment, prior to formally applying for certification, whereby BRE’s expert auditors reviewed their existing BIM policies and workflows. The assessment, and subsequent feedback, helped BCAL Consulting refine their documentation and align their processes with ISO 19650-2:2018 before the formal certification process began.

As part of the certification process, BRE conducted a detailed assessment of BCAL Consulting’s BIM documentation, including their BEP (BIM Execution Plan), information management procedures, roles, responsibilities, and compliance with ISO 19650-2 requirements.

BRE delivers a range of innovative and rigorous products, services, standards and qualifications, and BCAL Consulting chose to work with BRE due to its reputation as a global leader in BIM certification, and its deep expertise in ISO 19650 standards. BCAL Consulting were particularly impressed by BRE’s structured approach to assessment and guidance and were keen to be aligned with BRE’s level of credibility across the industry.

Following a thorough process, certification was successfully completed in early 2023.
