BREEAM Assessor Network Meeting, Helsinki (24 March)
Dan: My role has grown from Business Development Manager for the UK to covering the UK and Scandinavia, and I am now also a team leader. However, I am still the Business Development Manager focused on the UK and Scandinavia, so this remains a large part of my day-to-day role. I assist a whole range of professionals within the built environment including Developers, Principal Contractors, Investment Funds, Asset Managers and have strong links with our vital assessor network. I love the variety of my role especially within my regions and find different approaches to BREEAM in UK and Scandinavia fascinating.
Dan: Before joining BRE, I worked in roles focused on sustainability, real estate, and strategic advisory, including positions at a European co-living company and a sustainability consultancy that focused on energy reduction technologies. These experiences gave me a strong understanding of how environmental performance and commercial priorities intersect, as well as how important clear guidance is when navigating sustainability frameworks.
Dan: I am motivated by seeing the real-world impact of sustainability done well. I love to celebrate not just the top performers, but all companies that make positive decisions, whether large or small, that contribute to meaningful change.
Dan: One of the ongoing challenges is that sustainability is still being ‘value-engineered’ out of projects. We need strong advocates for sustainability to be involved throughout the entire process, from design and construction through to the asset management of the operational building. Without sustainability leaders embedded in these processes and keeping the issue on the agenda, it is unfortunately still dropped or not prioritised. Hopefully, this commitment will continue to move in the right direction until the whole industry is consistently making positive decisions in this area.
I also like the fact that BREEAM keeps evolving. It reflects what we’re learning as an industry, which makes the work interesting and meaningful.
Dan: On a personal note, I love our electric car. When combined with ensuring that our energy provider sources electricity from renewable sources, it gives me peace of mind that we are travelling sustainably when driving around the North Yorkshire countryside and beyond.
Dan: It has also been proven to be more cost effective when sustainability is integrated early into the design stages. Engaging with one of our fantastic networks of assessors as early as possible is strongly encouraged, and if in doubt, you can always ask me as well.
