Describes a diary survey of journeys made in the Watford area of
Hertfordshire and reports the results of a first stage analysis of the data collected. The data provide an empirical base for investigating
multi-purpose journeys with a view to investigating multi-purpose journeys, with a view to identifying people's requirements, according to their circumstances, for the relative location of shops and other types of urban facility. The first stage analysis explores the incidence of single multi-purpose journeys, particularly those on which some shopping was done; also, how this incidence varied according to the number and types of other activities pursued on these journeys, the day of the week and the circumstances of the respondents who made them. Conclusions are drawn about the importance of the planned location of shops in this context.
