This Technical Note discusses the various factors involved in the preservation of external joinery timber. Since its introduction in 1967, and its subsequent revisions, it has been widely adopted by industry and users as the basis for specifying joinery treatments.

In the previous edition changes were made in the way in which the recommended treatments, and the organic-solvent preservatives, are specified. This results from the publication of BS 5589:1978 and BS 5707:Part 1:1979, which now cover many of the requirements previously detailed in the Note.

The importance of safety aspects is recognised by reference to the Pesticides Safety Precautions Scheme which now covers all wood preservatives. Only joinery preservatives cleared under the scheme are listed in Appendix B to this Note. (Preface)
