This paper reviews a study of 472 accidents to tower and mobile cranes undertaken by the Building Research Establishment in co-operation with major engineering insurance companies. Repair costs to the machines amount to approximately £1 million. There were 35 cases of injury - including 4 fatalities. It was found that human error continues to be a predominant source of accidents, accounting for more than half the total number and over 80% of the costs. The accidents causing injury and those associated with the erection/dismantling of tower cranes, backwards jib collapses, wind action and overturning are examined in detail. Preventative measure are discussed. The paper ends with a brief review of current and proposed crane safety research at BRE.
