RSPB Saltholme Visitor Centre provides a beautiful wildlife viewing experience, on a former industrial site.
The Centre was designed to promote sustainable practice as well as encourage visitors to learn more about sustainability. This is definitely portrayed in the final design which actually achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating back in 2010. The building itself incorporates passive design techniques, such as the stack effect, while also introducing a range of low and zero carbon technologies, including a biomass boiler, a ground source heat pump, and a solar PV array.
The site itself allows the general public to enjoy the wildlife surrounding the visitor centre, which changes from season to season. There are around 6 miles of beautiful walkways allowing visitors access to the pools and ponds created as part of the design. The water levels within these pools can be controlled by the RSPB in order to influence wading birds to stop at Saltholme during migration. If admiring the flora or bird watching isn’t your thing the site offers a range of other events throughout the year. Having just said goodbye to winter (apparently), the Saltholme team are expecting their newest arrivals. Join them between the 28th March and 12th April in their lambing shed to welcome the new flock.

The Saltholme visitor centre and café is open daily from 10:00 to 16:00. Those arriving by car are required to pay £4 per vehicle, while those who arrive by public transport, by bike, or alternatively walk to the site, don’t pay a penny!
