In the past, fears have been expressed of damage to buildings by vibration caused, for example, by new developments in transport. For this reason the vibrations set up by the underground railways in London and, in the 1920’s, by the heavy road vehicles then coming into increasing use, were investigated. These fears have not been realized; in fact, with comparatively few sources of vibration is there any risk of damage to normal buildings. On the other hand, human beings are very sensitive to vibration, which can be considered as 'unpleasant' or 'painful' by people long before there is any likelihood of structural damage.

Methods of reducing vibration from machines and of protecting sensitive apparatus from vibration are discussed.
