Preparation of this report formed part of the Building Research Establishment's programme of investigations of large panel system (LPS) dwellings announced by the Minister for Housing and Construction in October 1984. The report is in two parts and this second part gives guidance on appraisal of structural adequacy and durability. The investigation of the LPS dwellings was described in Part 1.
This second part covers the durability assessment of LPS dwellings and the likelihood of corrosion of the reinforcement in the precast reinforced concrete components, which in some circumstances has led to cracking and spalling. The guidance in this report is necessarily general. It is appropriate for the engineer to interpret and apply its recommendations to the particular circumstances of the building being appraised on the basis of his/her engineering judgement.
