A type of flooring failure which has been reported on many occasions is the lifting of clay flooring tiles from a concrete sub floor. The typical feature of this failure is the general loosening of an area of tiles (the area may be the whole room) from the bed on which they are laid, and the formation of either an arch or a ridge. Two methods to prevent the lifting of clay tiles are the sand layer method and the paper or felt layer method.

Replaced by Digest 79 (2nd series).
