It was found that savings in the running costs of electric heat pumps compared with most conventional central heating systems do not currently justify their extra capital cost. This paper discusses how, once a 40 per cent reduction in capital cost, a 43 per cent increase in performance, or smaller improvements in both, are achieved, the heat pump will be cost-effective as a replacement for oil-fired heating. 3 pages.
