Reports on tests of various types of preservative and water repellent (limewater, silicones, silicon esters and siliconates) on different types of stone. The object was to compare similar surfaces, treated and untreated, in suitable areas of buildings under controlled conditions. Of 24 sites used in various parts of the country, seven were considered major experiments and are reported at length.

The results were mostly negative. Where decay appeared to have been arrested, this was so short-lived that it would be difficult to justify the expense of treatment. In some instances the greatest benefit was from the initial cleaning and preparation.
