Failures: Slates lifting or rattling in strong winds; battens split and underlay penetrated by slate nails; water ingress to roof space.
Defects: Slate or clout nails or clips, used to secure the slates to the battens, of incorrect size for the slate thickness and for prevention of uplift by wind action; battens of incorrect size for slate fixings used.
