Timber is one of the most widely used construction materials in the world. It can be seriously damaged by certain types of fungi, insects and marine borers. This Note describes the various forms of treatment available, and provides information that should assist timber users and building designers in tropical countries to: assess the need for preservative treatment, select the type of treatment most appropriate to the circumstances, and ensure that treatment is carried out satisfactorily and safely.
