The effect known as pattern staining, in which dark and light patterns appear on plaster surfaces, is well known to architects and builders. The pattern on a lath and plaster ceiling may form a more or less complete replica, in light and shade, of the lathing, joists, etc. The effect may also appear on other materials. This effect is due to a temperature difference and possible methods of prevention are discussed.
