This two-part digest gives, in Part 1 (Digest 197), guidance on the choice of paints and other coatings for internal and external walls according to the appearance and life required and the type of substrate. It discusses plasters, cement and concrete, bricks and stone, but excludes metal, wood and plastics. Part 2 (Digest 198) gives information on the adverse factors which affect paint on wall surfaces and ways of identifying and remedying defects.

Painting the great majority of wall surfaces presents no special problems and the results are quite successful. Occasionally, however, defects or failures are experienced. Digest 198 discusses the causes of paint failures on interior and exterior wall surfaces and suggests remedial treatments. It is very often a combination of mildly adverse factors which causes a failure, factors which by themselves may not create problems.
