Instances of decay in windows and other exterior joinery are often due to the use of redwood that contains some sapwood. The basic causes of decay are the low natural resistance of sapwood and the presence in the wood of sufficient moisture to permit the growth of wood-destroying fungi. This leaflet discusses how to prevent the entry of moisture and how to treat decay once it has occurred.
