The need for additional guidance on building on clay soils was established by concern at the high incidence of subsidence damage during the 1975-76 drought. This three-part digest (numbers DG240, DG241 and DG242) supplements the earlier three-part digest 'Soils and foundations' - nos. 63, 64 and 67 - and is based on work done by BRE following the drought. This individual part (Digest 241) discusses designs which should provide stable foundations in more adverse circumstances (suitable to withstand the larger movements sometimes induced by root action). It covers narrow strip foundations and bored pile foundations and briefly compares the costs.

Digest 241 (1980) was reissued with minor revisions in 1984 and with further minor revisions in 1990.

Related Digests:

Digest 240, part 1 of this digest, describes the shrinking and swelling behaviour of clay soils and shows the general location within the UK of the more common shrinkable clays.

Digest 242, part 3 of this digest, describes the detailed design (layout and loading) of bored pile and beam foundations.
