In the many non-traditional forms of construction that have been developed for housing in recent years, considerable attention has been given to materials and methods for building the external and party walls. Concrete, both dense and lightweight, has been used extensively and many specialized systems of construction have been developed. This Digest discusses how concrete blocks may be used for constructing housing and covers factors that should be taken into account at the design stage, in the specification and during site work.
