A number of timbers in common use are susceptible to staining if they come into contact with iron or iron compounds under damp conditions. The resulting stains are usually black or blue-black in colour and may be very intense, so that they spoil the appearance of the wood. This leaflet explains how this staining occurs and how it can be prevented, and gives advice on methods of removing the stains.
