Hazards from the concentration of solar radiation by textured window glass (Scanned copy)

This report assesses the potential hazard created by the concentration of solar radiation by two types of textured window glass: hand-spun bullion and Flemish decorative glass. The sun’s incident intensity focussed by ’lens’ like hand-spun bullion and Flemish glass is shown to be sufficient to produce serious thermal damage and possibly ignition of many modern furnishings made from synthetic fibres. It is therefore recommended that caution should be exercised when installing these types of glass in windows and doors exposed to direct sunlight and an acceptable alternative may be the use of ’mock bullion’ glass, uniform in thickness. However if the traditional hand-spun bullion is preferred then treatment with clear, colourless nail varnish may reduce the hazard. 21 pages. (page iv was blank and not scanned).
