Soil, in the form of rammed earth, wattle and daub, and adobe, is one of the most commonly used building materials for the rural communities in developing countries. As part of its work on low-cost housing, the Building Research Establishment has investigated how the suitability of soils for blockmaking may be assessed. This paper provides guidance for those supervising blockmaking, on tests to help with the selection of soil.
