A survey of the locations, quantities and methods of disposal or use of the waste materials of major importance in the context of their application in the building and construction industries has been made, and the possible outlets for waste materials not at present used are reviewed. The technical problems associated with the use of waste materials in construction are considered and the relevant solutions discussed.

It is explained that protection of the user by means of adequate British or departmental Standards is essential, otherwise problems may arise and the application of particular waste materials may fall into disrepute. While technical problems must be solved first, the ultimate factor determining the competitiveness of waste materials is their cost, and transport costs are often very important. In any economic analysis, however, social benefits and energy savings should be taken into account.

The survey covers the waste materials available in England and Wales but some information on the situation in Scotland is included. A supplementary survey of waste materials in Scotland is in progress.
