Building information modelling life cycle assessment: An introduction to IMPACT
A new information paper by author Daniel Doran considers how embodied impacts in buildings are measured and approaches to building-level life cycle assessment in BIM. The implementation of BIM opens up significant opportunities for designers and specifiers to really understand how the whole life impact of the building can be maximized at the design stage through the integration of building-level LCA with BIM. BRE has responded through the recognition of IMPACT-compliant tools (and equivalent) in BREEAM schemes. This paper, funded by the BRE Trust, introduces embodied impacts, how they are measured using LCA and reviews the key themes and advantages of building-level LCA and its integration in BIM and BREEAM.
