CPW showcase BIM implementation through successful BIM certification

Overview

Having identified increased industry awareness of BIM, CPW determined that successful BIM certification to ISO 19650-2:2018 would prove their expertise and validate their capabilities.

About

CPW are passionate and experienced MEP engineers with sustainability at their core. CPW are on a mission to design zero carbon buildings, delivering exemplar engineering solutions to a wide range of clients and sectors.

Challenges

Awareness of Information Management using BIM has grown in recent years, due to an increased appreciation of the benefits that it provides to a range of stakeholders, including architects, engineers, and construction professionals.

For CPW, a leading UK environmental building services consultancy firm, it became clear that many of their clients and main contractors were recognising these benefits and adopting these processes.

On this basis, CPW decided that achieving ISO 19650-2:2018 Information Management Certification for Businesses using BIM was the way forward to show their expertise, validate their capabilities, and ensure a structured and reliable approach to BIM.

Solutions

CPW’s existing working relationship with BRE, based on other areas within their business, meant that when this requirement occurred, it was a natural progression for CPW to consider BIM certification with BRE. Before formally starting the certification process, CPW spent time considering new operational procedures, including documentation and in-house processes. Once CPW implemented these improvements, it was well positioned to proceed.

The certification journey began with an initial application, followed by a desktop and project focussed assessment. As a result, CPW demonstrated effective use of documentation and processes, employee understanding of these types of projects and an ability to meet client requirements.
CPW received continued support from BRE in achieving certification and were particularly impressed with the flexibility that BRE offered during the assessment process. This was of importance as CPW were adapting to new ways of working alongside the implementation of new processes.

Working with BRE has been very easy; they have been available to us to gain valuable information to support the certification process. They helped us through each step of the process at our speed. This allowed us time to evolve and implement changes throughout

Project outcome

Achieving certification requires effort and input from team members across an organisation. There was strong buy-in from stakeholders across CPW, on the understanding that ISO 19650-2:2018 certification is vital for organisational success. “I can say that engaging in this process has already educated our team, brought an awareness to our staff of our processes, the future of BIM at CPW and the wider industry in the future Golden Thread of Information” summarises Rob.

Following the thorough certification process, CPW successfully achieved ISO 19650-2:2018 certification towards the end of 2023.

Next steps

Since achieving BIM Business Certification, CPW has been able to verify that their services perform as expected, and successfully demonstrate this to their customers.
CPW is continuing to develop its processes, and annual audits by BRE’s auditors will ensure maintenance of quality, allowing the longstanding, strong working relationship between the organisations to continue.

BIM certification

Our scheme certifies an organisations’ capability to input into the Information Management process for the delivery phase of appointments (e.g. projects) and produce outputs from that process.

Certification helps the supply chain demonstrate conformance to ISO 19650-2:2018, accelerating innovation and collaboration of clients and project teams.
