This survey records and broadly classifies current manifestations and past evidence of instability in the coastal cliffs of Essex and South Suffolk, from Mar Dyke, N. of Tilbury, to the Butley River, E. of Woodbridge.

Abandoned cliffs and some slopes just inland are also included. The survey is confined to cliffs composed of soft rocks (the Chalk being excluded) and comprises a surface examination of the above area, guided and supplemented by a study of the geological and topographical maps and the relevant literature. Descriptions and available references are given for all the unstable areas examined, the locations of which are shown on 2 inch to 1 mile maps (black and white only).
