First paint products gain coveted independent environmental badge of quality

Note: This press release is over six months old and the details may have been superseded. Please contact the Press Office for the latest information
Three products from a leading UK paint manufacturer, Johnstone’s Trade, have been certificated to BRE Global’s Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) scheme in line with EN 15804 – the European standard for the sustainability of construction products. BRE Global’s certification mark represents quality and ensures that products have undergone a rigorous verification process. BRE Director of Sustainable Products David Richardson said ‘Congratulations to Johnstone’s for being the first decorative coating manufacturer to receive this certification with three of its products – Acrylic Satin, Professional Gloss and Aqua Water Based Gloss. We look forward to working with them on a further six products that are lined up to go through the BRE Global EPD process in the coming months’. An EPD is a standardised way of assessing the environmental impact of a product through its lifespan from raw materials and manufacturing to application, use and disposal. Credible EPD, such as that offered by BRE Global, are independently verified to strict standards to ensure the underlying data, data handling and the EPD itself are consistently reliable. This credibility gives specifiers and architects peace of mind that they are specifying products in keeping with environmental standards such as BREEAM. 'Unquestionably, we are in the midst of a movement towards the design and construction of the most sustainable buildings the UK has ever seen' said  Helen Tiplady, Specification Marketing Manager at Johnstone’s Trade. 'The Government’s insistence that all publicly procured buildings must be BIM compliant by 2016 has been a significant driving force behind this. At Johnstone’s, we have never been more confident that our range provides architects and specifiers with products that will help them meet such sustainable targets.' Full details of Johnstone’s EPD – and of the BRE Global EPD scheme – are available on GreenBookLive, a unique reference source and online listing of verified products and services.
