On 16th May 1968, a gas explosion in the kitchen of an 18th floor flat resulted in the collapse of the entire south-east corner of Ronan Point, a 22-storey east London tower block, causing four deaths and 17 injuries.
A BRE Investigation, which included recreating the incident using a scale model of the building, was able to explain how the relatively minor explosion caused such catastrophic damage, and formed the basis of guidance on the construction and maintenance of large panel system buildings.
