Inspiring places: The Crystal – a Sustainable Cities Initiative by Siemens

crystalCities account for the biggest share of energy consumption, CO2 emissions and environmental impact, half the world’s population already lives in cities, and the number of city dwellers is rapidly growing.

Extensive research has been carried out by Siemens in order to help cities identify and understand new urban challenges and highlight workable solutions. The Crystal showcases global trends and challenges alongside existing technological solutions to build environmentally sustainable, liveable and prosperous cities.

Some of the exhibits to explore include Go Electric; looking into solutions providing sustainable energy to cities, improved energy storage and uptake of renewable. The ‘Future Life’ theatre invites us to imagine how cities might look in 2050. Other exhibits to explore include water efficiency, transport infrastructure and making cities more resilient.

Further information about the different exhibits can be found here:

Aside from the exhibitions, The Crystal is one of the world’s greenest buildings, achieving outstanding BREEAM accreditation. The Crystal is an all-electric building that uses solar power and a ground source heat pump to generates its own energy as well as incorporating rainwater harvesting, black water treatment and automated building management systems.
