My Construction Role Model: The teacher that inspired me

I knew I was interested in working in the environmental sector since the end of my time at school, however my decision for this was confirmed while at sixth form. It was an area I felt had some of the greatest threats of the 21st century posed against it with the impact of climate change, flooding and other environmental hazards. Not only did it interest me, but it was also an area where I felt I could make a difference.

My construction role model was my A-level geology teacher who made this subject and environmental science engaging, interesting and encouraged me to pursue a career in this field.  I continued my studies at university following this path which eventually brought me to a career at the BRE. If this teacher had not been so enthusiastic, my interest for building a better world and working in the environmental sector may have altered my career path.

By working at BRE I have been given the opportunity to get involved with key projects that help to tackle the issues the UK faces in the 21st century. This has been done through my involvement with the BRE Scotland and the Centre for Resilience. This has allowed me to be heavily involved with helping to address the issue of flooding in the UK.
